Government:
The United States of America is a federal constitutional republic. It comprises 50 states, a federal district, and several territories in the Pacific and Caribbean. The country is situated in central North America bordered by Canada to the north, Mexico from to south, and Russia to west. 48 states and Washington, DC are located in the mailand between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, while the state of Alaska is seperated from the mainland by Canada, and the state of Hawaii, is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific.
History:
The mainland of the US is thought to have been mostly inhabited by indeginous people known as native Americans until 1492. Christopher Colombus discovered the new continent and set the road for many settelments to follow. The spanish settlements in the modern southwestern states, the French settlements in much of the interior south to the Gulf of Mexico, English settlements begining in Virginia, and the Dutch in the lower Hudson river. With the accelerated immigration from Engalnd. Then came the American revolution marked by the independence of the United Sates and the election of the first president, George Washington, one of the founding fathers of this new nation. After independence, the US struggled with a civil, world I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars. With these struggles the US built a strong economy based on capitalism that helped the nation become the most powerful nation on earth with far and wide influence.
Politics:
The current president of the United States is Barak Obama, the 44th and the first African American president. He is in charge of the excutive branch of the government, The 435 house representative and 100 senators who constitue the congress or the legislative bracnh, are responsible for making the federal laws. The last part of the government is Judicial branch which interprets and apply the law.
The US is mostly represented by two parties: the democratic party is the oldest party in the US, and runs a center left agenda. The republican party is considered a conservative party and runs on mostly right agenda. throught the years, other third parties have participated in genral elections with limited success such as the progressive party and the green party.
Geography:
The geograpghy of the United States of America is as diverse as its population. Because of its size, there is the mohabee desert where temperatures can reach 115F (50C) and Alaska where the temerature can dip weill below the -40F (-40C). You don't need to go that far to see the contrast though. The rockie mountains with some of the highest peeks in the North American continents divide the west coast from the plains where some of the world largest rivers flow (the missisipi and the Missouri rivers).
